The Empty Coruña? Summer school has started in a formerly abandoned jail with 25 Students of architecture, law, economy, art and sociology. Simultaneously, the citizens initiative “Proxeto Cárcere” hosts 2 exhibition openings: “Spanish Dream” by Cadelas Verdes juxtaposing scenes of domestic life onto empty buildings – previously shown at the Spanish Pavilion for the 2016 Venice Biennale – and “Cartografía Social do Dereito ao Hábitat na Cidade da Coruña” by Arquitectura Sin Fronteras showing the life of the homeless in Coruna. The trailer “Empty Coruña?” by Estefanía Calo and Juan Pirola was inaugurated. Introductory talks by Placido Lizancos on the state of abandoned buildings in Coruna “Por Que Empty Coruña” and by Scott Lloyd and Hans-Christian Rufer.  “New Clues for impact-oriented designing” and “Action Network Models” introduced the research studio part of the summer school. Students were organized in 7 teams representing the 7 typologies of empty buildings in Coruna. After Choosing a specific case study from a selection of 100 (from more than 2000 documented) they started working in the temporary Studio at the local “Centro Cívico Cidade Vella”.

We will be working here until September 8th, open to all, come join us!
